In the field of fractology (the science of how stuff breaks), “mist” and “hackle” are features of  a fracture plane associated with the way cracks branch out. Though shattered glass can be unlucky or inconvenient, it may also be a source of information and beauty.

“Mist” also conjures nuptial effects: misty eyes, the sheer veil, or the thick atmosphere of emotion. “Hackles” are mammalian erectile hairs (like the ones on the back of your neck), which rise in response to strong emotion: fear, excitement, awe, anticipation.
